... Ernst Hesse verwendet die Zeichnung als ebenso deutliches wie dezentes Ausdrucksmittel. Im Wesentlichen ist sie bei ihm elaborierte, sorgsam ausgeführte Geste, die Züge der Entschleunigung besitzt, und das kennzeichnet alle Werkgruppen, die ein großes formales Spektrum vermitteln und doch schlüssig zusammengehören. Zeichnung wird zur austarierenden Vergewisserung im Gegenüber. Sie lotet das Verhältnis
zu möglichen Dingen, aber auch Raumkonstellationen aus, sie versteht sich als Annäherung und als Erfahrung, sich auf Fremdes einlassen.
Ein Teil der Arbeiten zeigt konkrete Gegenstände, Dinge, bewahrt ihnen bei aller festen Konturierung aber eine Durchsichtigkeit und Fragilität
als Präsenz aus der Vorstellungswelt, die noch im Begreifen und Vergegenwärtigen verfangen ist. Obzwar es sich überwiegend um Linienkonstruktionen handelt, ist ihr Ort auf der Fläche der Raum: als Kontinuum in die Tiefe aber auch aus dieser heraus.

... Ernst Hesse uses drawings as a means of expression that is as clear as it is discreet. Essentially, for him it is an elaborated, carefully executed gesture that bears the hallmarks of deceleration, and that’s something that distinguishes all the groups of works that convey a broad spectrum of form and yet fit coherently together. Drawing becomes a balancing reassurance in the counterpart. It explores the relationship with potential things, but also spatial constellations; it is conceived as an approximation and as an experience of delving into the unfamiliar. Some of the works show specific objects, things, and yet amid all the firm contouring preserve a transparency and fragility as a presence from the world of imagination that remains caught up in conception and visualization. Although the drawings are primarily structures of lines, their place is on the surface of the space: as a continuum into depth, but also out of it.
