Frühzeitig, in den 1990er Jahren, hat Ernst Hesse selbst formuliert, worum es ihm im Kern bis heute geht: „Ein wesentlicher Bestandteil meiner Arbeit ist die Auseinandersetzung mit fremden Kulturen. […] Gerade in einer Zeit der Suche nach individueller, ethnischer und kultureller Freiheit sowie der wirtschaftlichen Globalisierung und der damit verbundenen Völkerwanderung gilt es, die kulturelle Identität zu schützen und zu fördern.“ (1) In diesem Sinne führt er bis heute Seminare und gemeinsame Ausstellungsprojekte ebenso in Düsseldorf wie in der Ferne, außerhalb der eurozentrischen Perspektive, durch und stellt Verbindungen und gegenseitiges Verständnis unter Kulturen auf der ganzen Welt her. Ein zentrales Handlungsfeld seiner Aktivitäten ist der Round Table zum wechselseitigen Reden und Zuhören, schließlich als Ort,

an dem gemeinsam gespeist, getrunken und gefeiert wird. Das Lebensnotwendige, das Gesellige und das Lernen voneinander, auch die Bewusstwerdung für die Ressourcen der Natur und ihre Bewahrung, treffen im Radius der Kunst aufeinander. Eigene Biographie, Individualität und gemeinsame Erfahrung und Anliegen verbünden sich. ...

Ernst Hesse himself described early on, in the 1990s, what his work is essentially about: “A key element in my work is engaging with other cultures. [...] It is important to protect and foster cultural identity specifically in an age characterized by the quest for individual, ethnic, and cultural freedom as well as economic globalization and the related migration of peoples.” (1) In this vein he continues to conduct seminars and implement collaborative exhibition projects in Düsseldorf and further afield, adopting an anything but Eurocentric perspective, establish- ing links to and a mutual understanding of cultures across the whole world. Round tables function as a central field of activity in his endeavors: They provide a place to speak and listen to one another, where people can eat, drink, and celebrate together.
